WHEN THE arena was clean, Kai had Rob help him strap a huge five-hundred-pound round bale of hay to the front loader and drive it up to the upper paddock. There was a circular metal feeder up there, and once Kai had dumped the bale in the middle, Rob helped him unstrap it.

All the while, Kai sidestepped Rob’s curious questions by issuing more instructions. The pick had to be shaken just so to make the clean sawdust fall out. The hay that fell from the feeder in the paddock and was now soaked in urine had to be raked up into the front loader and taken out to the manure pile.

As Rob watched Kai move among the horses, handle them, and talk to them, he sensed bold determination. Under that, only briefly, Kai’s face reflected sadness. Almost despair. Instead of asking, Rob got a pick and a wheelbarrow and started shoveling shit.

It wasn’t as bad as he’d feared it might be. The odor of the pellets was slightly pungent and easily overridden by the sweet smell of horses and hay. Now that Kai was blanketing the horses and turning them out again, leading them out one at a time, Rob didn’t worry about being stepped on anymore. Cleaning stalls was less bad than serving as a buffer between Jas and their dad. The manual labor acquired a rhythm of its own, smooth and therapeutic, much like when he was sanding wood. Rob leaned into it.
